Summary:
Kate escapes her boyfriend Lance’s unexpected public proposal by taking a last-minute work trip to Boston, where she hopes to avoid the holiday chaos. In the snow-covered, fairy-light-filled city, she quickly feels at home—until she discovers she’s sharing her rental with Sam, a ruggedly handsome but infuriating man, due to a booking mix-up. Forced to coexist, their clashing personalities make living together a challenge, but when Sam unexpectedly comes to her aid, their frosty dynamic begins to melt. As they grow closer, Kate faces a dilemma when Lance shows up, leaving her torn between returning to her old life or taking a chance on a man she’s only just met but might be meant for.
My Thoughts:
Emma Tallon’s Snow Going Back offers a festive, heart-warming escape perfect for the holiday season. Packed with humour, a dash of romance, and a cast of memorable characters, this story had me hooked from the start.
Kate’s life takes a chaotic turn when her boyfriend Lance proposes in front of her family and friends—a spectacle that leaves her feeling cornered. Her reluctant “yes” sets the stage for a whirlwind wedding just weeks away. However, an unexpected work trip to Boston provides her with the perfect excuse to step back and reevaluate.
Boston’s wintry charm quickly draws Kate in, but her stay becomes far more complicated when she meets Sam, the brooding yet ruggedly handsome relative of the late homeowner. Thanks to a mix-up, the two are forced to share the house—and their clashing personalities lead to hilariously entertaining moments. From Sam drinking all the milk to Kate interrupting his precious “game nights,” the pair’s bickering feels authentic and comically relatable. Yet, beneath their animosity, a slow-brewing connection begins to take shape.
As Kate wrestles with her feelings for Sam and the weight of her impending wedding, the story balances heartfelt moments with laugh-out-loud situations. I particularly loved the vibrant supporting cast—especially Kate’s mother, whose over-the-top wedding preparations never fail to amuse. Kate’s journey of self-discovery is handled with sensitivity, making the conclusion all the more satisfying.
The Narration:
The audiobook, narrated by Hayden Bishop, is a treat in itself. Her ability to seamlessly shift between British and American accents, and bring both male and female characters to life, added depth to the story. She captured the characters’ personalities so vividly that it felt like I was watching a film unfold in my mind.
Final Thoughts:
If you’re looking for a lighthearted yet touching holiday read, Snow Going Back is an excellent choice. For maximum enjoyment, I highly recommend the audiobook version—it’s an absolute delight!
