As an avid reader of books, I appreciate being introduced to new books and new authors. Sometimes I find a new author who quickly becomes a favourite. Sometimes, they do not. I chose to read Asking For a Friend because of its interesting premise, so let me introduce you to this debut novel from Andi Osho. This book publishes on February 1/22.
From The Publisher:
Forty-something Jemima’s life is on track – well, sort of, she just needs to bat her troublesome ex away for good. Twenty-something Meagan is in the midst of her five-phase plan and is nearly ready for phase three: a relationship.
While thirty-something Simi has had more it’s not yous than anyI dos.
These best friends decide it’s time to ditch the dating apps and play the love game by their own rules. They’re going to ask people out in real life…but only for each other. What could possibly go wrong?
Book Review:
While the book has some funny moments, the book fell a little flat for me. The characters were not that likeable and in fact I found them to be a little aggressive at times. At the onset I thought their relationship was strong as evidenced by the commitment to find men for each other. But soon I began to see that this friendship was not as supportive as I had once thought.
The book is told from the perspective of each of the friends. Despite this, I just didn’t connect to any of these women. Perhaps this is a mismatch between book and reader. The book is marketed as perfect for fans of Talia Hibbert and Jasmine Guillory whose books I enjoy, but the lack of a cohesive story has me cautioning other readers not to expect too much.
Audiobook Review:
The book is narrated by the author who I have learned is a comedian. While her performance was satisfactory, it isn’t as polished as the audiobooks I have listened to by professional narrators. I therefore would not recommend this format for this book.
What I Liked:
- The elements of humour scattered through the book
- That the central characters represent women in their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s.
- The varied personalities of each of the characters
I Recommend This Book To:
Those readers who enjoy romance novels written by debut authors.

Mind Beauty Simplicity
this does seem like a rather light hearted / lack of depth read. the idea of a few friends wanting to ditch dating apps though intrigues me and i can see how it could be humorous. thanks for the honest review.

Although I like the idea of three friends in different phases of their lives trying to choose the perfect date for each other, I can understand why it might dissapointed you. I love your honesty in this review!

Great honest review! The premise of the book sounds funny and like a lot of hijinks would ensue amongst the friends. It’s too bad the plot fell flat though, and the characters didn’t connect for you. Disappointing when the premise doesn’t live up to it!

Connection with the characters are what make a great story, and it’s unfortunate that was lacking. If I do decide to pick this book up, I’ll be sure to get the physical copy and skip the audio! Thank you for sharing your honest review Jodie!
