Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club (Hello Sunshine)’s pick for November 2024:
Founded in 2017, Hello Sunshine always chooses books with women at the centre of the story. Their website notes “We make our choices thoughtfully and look for ways to deepen our connection to books, authors and ourselves”. This book club chose “City of Night Birds” by Juhea Kim as their December 2024 pick.
Summary:
In City of Night Birds, Natalia Leonova, a once-revered Russian ballerina, returns to St. Petersburg in 2019, haunted by a devastating accident that derailed her career. Struggling with addiction and the ghosts of her past—including her complex family and the two dancers who shaped her fate—Natalia faces a life-altering decision when the darkly brilliant Dmitri offers her a chance to reclaim the stage. Torn between the pain of her past and the possibility of redemption, Natalia must confront love, betrayal, and ambition in the cutthroat world of Russian ballet. Juhea Kim’s vivid and intimate novel explores artistry, forgiveness, and the resilience of the human spirit.
Good Morning America’s Book Club’s pick:
The GMA Book Club is officially called “Cover to Cover” and was started in the Fall of 2019. Their selections highlight diversity and books are chosen from both fiction and non-fiction genres. The book club chose “The Last One” by Rachel Howzell Hall as their December 2024 pick.
Summary:
In Rachel Howzell Hall’s explosive romantasy debut, Kai awakens in a cursed land with no memory of her past and a mission to reach the Sea of Devour before the world worsens. Teaming up with a maddeningly skilled yet secretive blacksmith, she embarks on a perilous journey full of unnatural beasts and unanswered questions. As their fiery connection deepens, Kai discovers that in the kingdom of Vinevridth, nothing—and no one—is as it seems, including the man who may hold the key to her survival.
Read With Jenna (Jenna Bush Hager)’s pick:
In March 2019, the former First Daughter announced her book club on the Today show. Each month she chooses a book that is sure to generate discussion. Jenna chose “Devotions” by Mary Oliver as her December 2024 pick.
Summary:
In Devotions, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Mary Oliver presents a definitive collection of over 200 poems spanning more than five decades of her celebrated career. Curated by Oliver herself, the volume includes works from her debut collection, No Voyage and Other Poems (1963), to her later masterpiece, Felicity (2015). Renowned for her luminous explorations of nature, mindfulness, and the interconnectedness of all living things, Oliver offers a profound respite from the chaos of modern life. Praised for its depth and beauty, this collection showcases the poet’s enduring ability to touch hearts and transform lives, poem by poem.
Oprah’s Book Club:
Oprah Winfrey started this book club in 1996 as a segment on her TV show. Many obscure titles have risen to bestseller status as a result of her picks. Oprah’s latest pick is “Small Things Like These” by Claire Keegan.
Set in a small Irish town in 1985, Small Things Like These follows coal merchant and family man Bill Furlong during the bustling weeks before Christmas. While delivering to a local convent, Bill uncovers a troubling truth that forces him to reckon with his past and the town’s silent complicity under the church’s influence.
