Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club (Hello Sunshine)’s pick for November 2024:
Founded in 2017, Hello Sunshine always chooses books with women at the centre of the story. Their website notes “We make our choices thoughtfully and look for ways to deepen our connection to books, authors and ourselves”. This book club chose “We Will Be Jaguars” by Nemonte Nenquimo as their November 2024 pick.
Summary:
We Will Be Jaguars is the powerful memoir of Nemonte Nenquimo, an internationally renowned activist and member of Ecuador’s Waorani tribe. Raised in the Amazon rainforest, Nemonte’s early years were immersed in Indigenous traditions of plant medicine, oral storytelling, and shamanism. As a teenager, she encountered city life with an evangelical missionary group but was drawn back to her roots by ancestral dreams. Returning to her culture, Nemonte emerged as a leading climate activist, uniting Indigenous groups across the Upper Amazon and achieving a historic victory to protect half a million acres of rainforest from oil exploitation. Her memoir unearths generations of Indigenous history and exposes the harsh impacts of colonisation, embodying a life of resilience and profound connection to the Amazon.
Good Morning America’s Book Club’s pick:
The GMA Book Club is officially called “Cover to Cover” and was started in the Fall of 2019. Their selections highlight diversity and books are chosen from both fiction and non-fiction genres. The book club chose “The Blue Hour” by Paula Hawkins as their November 2024 pick.
Summary:
The Blue Hour takes readers to Eris, a remote island off the Scottish coast, accessible only part of the day, with a single house and a solitary inhabitant. Once home to Vanessa, a famed artist whose unfaithful husband vanished two decades prior, Eris is now inhabited by Grace, a woman who thrives in isolation. However, a shocking discovery in a London gallery brings an unexpected visitor to the island, threatening to unravel long-buried secrets.
Read With Jenna (Jenna Bush Hager)’s pick:
In March 2019, the former First Daughter announced her book club on the Today show. Each month she chooses a book that is sure to generate discussion. Jenna chose “The Motherless Land” by Nikki May as her November 2024 pick.
Summary:
This Motherless Land follows Funke, a Nigerian girl uprooted after tragedy to live with her mother’s distant family in England, where she finds comfort only in her cousin Liv. Free-spirited Liv offers Funke the warmth and connection she craves, and the two grow into adulthood as close friends. However, past family choices cast a long shadow, and a new tragedy strains their bond, leaving them divided by distance, cultural differences, and personal ambitions. Set between Somerset and Lagos over two decades, this novel explores identity, cultural displacement, and generational trauma, questioning whether family wounds can ever truly be healed.
Oprah’s Book Club:
Oprah Winfrey started this book club in 1996 as a segment on her TV show. Many obscure titles have risen to bestseller status as a result of her picks. Oprah’s latest pick is “From Here to the Great Unknown” by Lisa Marie Presley and Riley Keough.
Summary:
From Here to the Great Unknown is the poignant memoir of Lisa Marie Presley, completed posthumously by her daughter, Riley Keough, to fulfill her mother’s final wish. Just a month before her sudden death in 2022, Lisa Marie asked Riley to help finish her life story. Drawing from her mother’s recorded tapes, Riley unveils Lisa Marie’s complex life: her wild childhood at Graceland, deep bond with her father, struggles with addiction, turbulent marriages—including one to Michael Jackson—and her enduring grief. Written in the voices of both mother and daughter, this unique memoir captures their shared pain and love, revealing the raw, intricate life of Elvis’s only child.
