Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club (Hello Sunshine)’s pick for September 2024:
Founded in 2017, Hello Sunshine always chooses books with women at the centre of the story. Their website notes “We make our choices thoughtfully and look for ways to deepen our connection to books, authors and ourselves”. This book club chose “The Comfort of Crows: A Backyard Year” as their September 2024 pick.
Summary:
In The Comfort of Crows, Margaret Renkl offers a literary devotional with fifty-two chapters following the creatures and plants in her backyard over the course of a year. As the seasons change, she captures the joy of the natural world and the grief over its losses, from a resourceful crow on New Year’s Day to bluebirds revisiting their spring nest in December. Alongside the natural world, Renkl reflects on her own life’s shifting rhythms, from children leaving home to the visible transformations in her surroundings. With original artwork by her brother, Billy Renkl, this book is a moving meditation on nature, hope, and commitment.
Good Morning America’s Book Club’s pick:
The GMA Book Club is officially called “Cover to Cover” and was started in the Fall of 2019. Their selections highlight diversity and books are chosen from both fiction and non-fiction genres. The book club chose “Colored Television” by Danzy Senna as their September 2024 pick.
Summary:
In this dark comedy about second acts, creative appropriation, and the racial identity-industrial complex, Jane, a struggling writer, hopes to turn her life around while house-sitting in Los Angeles and working on her novel, Nusu Nusu, which she believes will secure her tenure. When things don’t go as planned, she turns to Hollywood and meets a young producer eager for her to create “diverse content” for a streaming network. Just as her fortunes seem to improve, everything begins to unravel.
Read With Jenna (Jenna Bush Hager)’s pick:
In March 2019, the former First Daughter announced her book club on the Today show. Each month she chooses a book that is sure to generate discussion. Jenna chose “Blue Sisters” by Coco Mellors as her September 2024 pick.
Summary:
Three estranged sisters—Avery, a recovering addict turned lawyer, Bonnie, a former boxer working as a bouncer, and Lucky, a Paris model trying to escape her wild lifestyle—are brought back to their New York family home a year after the unexpected death of their fourth sister, Nicky. As they confront their shared grief, unresolved childhood issues, and the impending sale of their childhood apartment, they come to realize that the deepest secrets they’ve been keeping may be from themselves rather than each other.
Oprah’s Book Club
Oprah Winfrey started this book club in 1996 as a segment on her TV show. Many obscure titles have risen to bestseller status as a result of her picks. Oprah’s latest pick is “Tell Me Everything” by Elizabeth Strout.
Summary:
In Tell Me Everything, Elizabeth Strout returns to Crosby, Maine, with her signature empathy and deep understanding of the human condition. The story follows familiar characters like Lucy Barton, Olive Kitteridge, and Bob Burgess as they confront a shocking crime, navigate complex relationships, and grapple with the meaning of life. Bob becomes involved in a murder investigation, defending a man accused of killing his mother, while forming a close friendship with Lucy Barton. Together, they reflect on their pasts and shared regrets. Lucy also connects with Olive Kitteridge, and through their storytelling, they explore the unrecorded lives around them, imbuing them with meaning. Strout’s narrative poignantly highlights how love, in its many forms, sustains us.

I love seeing which books are chosen for celebrity book clubs, as they’re not usually ones that I’m familiar with. The Comfort of Crows and Blue Sisters sounds intriguing. Thanks for sharing!
