In Rolling Towards Clear Skies, a doctor’s decision to foster two sisters upends her family and forces her to re-evaluate motherhood and compassion.
Summary:
In this heartfelt novel of hope and second chances, Maggie Blount, a divorced mother and California physician, puts her private practice on hold to help disaster-stricken communities with Doctors on Wheels. While in Louisiana after a devastating hurricane, Maggie bonds with two orphaned sisters and their puppy and decides to foster them, bringing them to her affluent home in Vista del Mar. The adjustment proves challenging as Maggie’s self-involved teenage daughters, Willa and Gemma, resist the newcomers, creating a chaotic and emotionally charged household. As Maggie navigates the struggles of blending her family, she must confront her role in her daughters’ entitled attitudes, teach them gratitude and empathy, and support the needs of all four girls and the puppy, all while managing crises both near and far.
My Thoughts:
Catherine Ryan Hyde’s Rolling Toward Clear Skies is a beautifully written novel that feels so authentic it could easily be mistaken for a memoir. The characters and storyline are masterfully crafted, pulling you into a tale that’s both heart-wrenching and deeply hopeful. I found myself fully immersed in Maggie Blount’s journey as a mother and physician navigating the complexities of disaster response and family dynamics.
Maggie, a divorced mother of two teenage daughters, Willa and Gemma, is part of Doctors on Wheels, travelling to areas devastated by natural disasters. Her work takes her to rural Louisiana following a category five hurricane, where she meets Jean and Rose, two sisters who have lost their parents and home in the storm. The contrast between these polite, resilient young women and Maggie’s self-centred daughters couldn’t be more stark. Struck by their plight, Maggie decides to foster them, along with their scruffy puppy, bringing them into her affluent Vista del Mar home.
What follows is an emotional exploration of family, empathy, and second chances. Maggie’s decision doesn’t sit well with Willa and Gemma, whose entitlement and resentment create tension in the household. The novel deftly portrays the challenges of blending a family, while also addressing Maggie’s own shortcomings as a parent. It’s a touching reminder that growth is possible for everyone, even in the most chaotic circumstances.
An interview with the media becomes a pivotal moment for the family, serving as a catalyst for change and a sense of unity. Hyde handles this turning point with finesse, making it both believable and deeply moving.
The Narration:
I chose to listen to the audiobook, narrated by the talented Kate Rudd, and it was an absolute pleasure. Her ability to capture the voices of characters across different ages added depth and emotion to the story. Her lovely tone and engaging delivery made this already compelling book even more enjoyable.
Final Thoughts:
If you’re looking for a heartfelt story of resilience, family, and the power of second chances, Rolling Toward Clear Skies is a must-read—or, in my case, a must-listen.

This sounds like a really lovely book. I haven’t read a blended family/interpersonal drama book like this in some time, so I might just need to snag this for one of my 2025 reads. Didn’t realize I was missing this type of story until this post!
