In The Christmas Star, a woman hires a stranger to pose as her famous boyfriend for the holidays, only to discover that Christmas magic may bring them closer than expected.
Summary:
Julia Devine loves Christmas, but the thought of spending it with her insufferable stepsister Becca dampens her holiday spirit. When Becca announces she’s bringing a handsome pilot to their family Christmas, Julia impulsively claims she’s dating movie star Hugo Turner, though it’s a complete lie. To keep up the charade, Julia enlists the help of Sam Hunter, an ordinary man who bears a striking resemblance to the actor. With no plans for the holidays, Sam agrees to pose as her celebrity boyfriend for the weekend. As the two navigate the festive deception, sparks begin to fly, and Julia wonders if this fake relationship might turn into something real.
My Thoughts:
As someone who loves a lighthearted Christmas story, I found The Christmas Star to be an absolute delight. The novella kicks off right before Christmas, Julia Devine’s favorite time of year, and she’s all set to enjoy it after planning a festive holiday program for her beloved Sunny Street Cinema. But there’s one thing looming over her: the idea of spending Christmas with her stepsister Becca, who somehow always manages to be the Grinch to Julia’s holiday cheer. When Becca calls to brag about the dreamy pilot she’s bringing to Christmas lunch, Julia impulsively tells her she’s dating movie star Hugo Turner. The only problem? Julia isn’t dating anyone, let alone a Hollywood heartthrob.
Cue Sam Hunter, an ordinary guy who just so happens to look uncannily like Hugo. With no holiday plans of his own, Sam agrees to play the part of Julia’s fake boyfriend for the weekend. As you can imagine, hilarity ensues, but amidst the Christmas chaos, something magical starts to blossom between them.
I loved watching Julia and Sam’s dynamic evolve. Their banter is quick-witted and fun, and there’s a sweetness in how they both go out of their way to help each other. One of my favorite parts is when Julia brings Sam home, introducing him as the famous Hugo Turner. The way her stepsister Becca reacts to meeting “Hugo” is absolutely priceless! The story moves along with funny, heartwarming moments that kept me entertained throughout.
The festive backdrop of the cinema also adds to the charm. Julia’s passion for organizing holiday events creates such a cozy, Christmassy atmosphere that draws you in. It feels like you’re right there with her, sipping hot cocoa and enjoying the festivities.
The Narration:
I listened to the audiobook version, narrated by Rachael Tidd, and her performance really brought the story to life. She has such a lovely tone, and her enthusiasm shines through, making Julia’s story even more engaging. Tidd’s narration added an extra layer of warmth and fun to an already delightful novella.
Final Thoughts:
The Christmas Star is a perfect holiday read—lighthearted, funny, and brimming with Christmas magic. If you’re looking for something festive and fun to cozy up with this season, I highly recommend it!
