Have you ever thought about winning the lottery? Maybe you’ve dreamed about how you would spend your winnings? Just My Luck by Adele Parks is the story of a couple that wins the lottery changing their lives forever. For me it was definitely a case of be careful what you wish for.
Plot Summary
The book begins with three couples who have socialized with one another for the past fifteen years. Three out of four Saturday nights were spent sharing a meal and discussing what happened in their lives since they last met. The couples also played the same six numbers in the lottery week after week. That is, until very recently when a disagreement in the group had two of the couples pulling out. When Lexi and Jake win £18 million in the lottery, their lives change in an instant.
Book Review
This tale really tells a story about the darker side of instant wealth. For Lexi and Jake, this win becomes a glaring example of how two people can vastly differ on what to do the money. The story was engaging, enlightening and full of twists. There were flashbacks in the story which added a sense of mystery and drama. Each character was developed over a strategic period of time which I thoroughly enjoyed. There were characters I admired, and also those I despised. I appreciated the slow reveal of secrets held by all six members of the group, which had been simmering for quite some time.
Audiobook Review
I listened to the audiobook version of the book which was narrated by Louise Brealey and Kristin Atherton who each gave an excellent performance. Their cadence and articulation of the story was appreciated as was the sense of realism their voices provided. I listened to the book at my usual 1.25x speed which was comfortable. For those readers that enjoy audiobooks, I would not hesitate to recommend this format.
What I Liked About Just My Luck:
- A story full of twists
- The polarizing values of the characters towards money
- The secrets held by each of the characters
I Recommend This Book To:
Reader who enjoy thrillers set around family life.
My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5.

I always like lottery stories, but the dark and the light side of winning a lottery. I think it’s something we all think about… a windfall. And I like a “slow reveal of secrets”. This book sounds intriguing.

I have a read a couple of books that revolve around what money does to people and how it shapes them, so this sounds like a wonderful and well told story! I love that the tension arises over the winning of the money and that slow divergences come to light.
