“Sweet Talk” follows the captivating late-night conversations and burgeoning romance between Jessie and Eliot, as Jessie grapples with revealing her true identity to Eliot while navigating their growing connection.
From The Publisher:
It’s officially booty o’clock, I’m alone again in my kitchen choking down a slice of terrible chocolate cake…and I’m pretty sure I just got drunk texted by the man I have a ginormous crush on.
I’ve been daydreaming about Eliot Hoffman’s dimples for two months, and even though I’m sure this was a mistake on his end, it doesn’t mean it’s not an opportunity on mine. It’s the middle of the night, and I just wanna talk to him. So I text him back.
And then somehow we keep talking…ALL NIGHT. We’re both insomniacs, so talking all night soon turns into talking EVERY night.
And talking about nothing soon turns into talking about something.
And here we go from in-depth analysis of reality TV to my relationship with my family to his amazing artwork. There’s no topic we don’t cover…
Except for who I really am. It’s the only question of his I won’t answer.
As my crush turns into an avalanche of Eliot, I think of him all the time now. But if he knew who I was, the entire house of cards we’ve built this relationship on would come toppling down. I want him to be mine, but we might never be more than just a sweet dream….
My Thoughts:
“Sweet Talk” by Cara Bastone is like stumbling upon a hidden gem in the wee hours of the night, just like Jessie did when she received that unexpected drunk text from her crush, Eliot. As I delved into this audiobook, I found myself drawn into the delightful banter between Jessie and Eliot, their late-night conversations weaving a web of humour and charm that kept me hooked from start to finish.
Bastone effortlessly crafts characters with depth and complexity, and Jessie and Eliot are no exception. Their individual backstories blend together in a refreshingly unique manner, adding layers to their burgeoning relationship. It’s particularly intriguing that Jessie knows who Eliot is, but Eliot remains unaware of Jessie’s true identity. This dynamic adds an extra layer of tension and anticipation to their interactions, as Jessie grapples with the dilemma of revealing her secret while navigating her growing feelings for Eliot. I found myself rooting for them as they navigated the murky waters of late-night confessions and heartfelt conversations.
“Sweet Talk” maintains a similar shorter length as its predecessor in the Love Lines series, but it doesn’t skimp on the swoon-worthy moments that Bastone is known for. Though I didn’t find it quite as captivating as the first book, I still savoured every minute of Jessie and Eliot’s journey towards each other.
The Narration:
The narration by Lidia Dornet and Chris Brinkley adds an extra dimension to the story, their performances breathing life into the characters of Jessie and Eliot. Their voices felt natural and authentic, enhancing my immersion in the audiobook experience.
My Final Thoughts:
“Sweet Talk” is a delightful addition to the Love Lines series, brimming with humor, heart, and a touch of sweetness that left me eagerly anticipating the next installment.
