In 2019, the world lost a beautiful writer in Dorothea Benton Frank. Prior to her death Dorothea has titled her next book, yet to be written, Reunion Beach. As a tribute to this author, several authors banded together to create a series of short stories, letters, poems and essays using the title of Reunion Beach. What a lovely way to remember their beloved Dottie, and to celebrate her life as a woman of the lowcountry in the U.S. South.
The Short Stories
Elin Hilderbrand’s contribution to this book is a sequel to her book Summer of ’69 entitled “Summer of ‘79”. Patti Callahan’s “The Bridesmaids” is the story of a group of women reuniting on a South Carolina beach. Mary Alice Monroe’s story is a touching Mother and Child reunion set in South Carolina. There are many other contributors as well, including Adriana Trigiani, Mary Norris and Nathalie Dupree. Particularly touching was the inclusion of stories from Dottie’s two children, Victoria Frank and William Frank.
Book Review
I enjoyed the contributions of each of these authors and appreciate the love and kindness displayed in these stories. Having read several of Dorothea’s books and remembering her humorous and engaging writing style, this book captures her graciousness and enthusiasm for life. The book feels special and is perfect for those that need a feel good read during the chaos of today’s world.
Audiobook Review
The audiobook is performed by Susan Bennett who is one of my favourite narrators. Her cadence, southern voice, and enthusiasm made this wonderful book even more enjoyable. I would not hesitate to recommend this version of the book to those that appreciate the audiobook format.
What I Liked About Reunion Beach:
- The wide variety of short stories, essays, letters and poems shared.
- The obvious respect and love for Dorothea expressed by the authors.
- The information gleamed, including why Dorothea started writing, in the book.
I Recommend This Book To:
Those readers who enjoy short stories founded in Women’s Fiction.
My rating:
4/5 stars.
