In Swan Song, Elin Hilderbrand delivers a masterful conclusion to her Nantucket novels, featuring new characters, dual timelines, and a gripping plot.
Summary:
In the grand finale of Elin Hilderbrand’s beloved Nantucket novels, “Swan Song,” the arrival of the flashy Richardsons shakes up the idyllic island community. As Chief of Police Ed Kapenash prepares for retirement after 35 years of service, a phone call disrupts his plans: the Richardsons’ 22-million-dollar summer home has burned down, and their personal assistant has vanished. This incident forces Ed to postpone his retirement and delve into the lives of the Richardsons, whose extravagant parties and social ambitions have already captivated the island. With local figures like real estate agent Fast Eddie and gossip Blond Sharon, who is navigating a divorce and a newfound passion for creative writing, Ed must piece together the mystery in his final act of service to the tight-knit community he loves. “Swan Song” masterfully intertwines sun-soaked drama, wisdom, and heart, celebrating Nantucket and its vibrant, intertwined characters.
My Thoughts:
In “Swan Song,” we are whisked away to the picturesque island one last time for a story brimming with intrigue, heart, and sun-soaked drama. Hilderbrand masterfully weaves together the lives of her characters, both new and familiar, against the backdrop of Nantucket’s beauty.
Chief of Police Ed Kapenash is ready to hang up his badge after thirty-five years of service, but fate has other plans. Just three days before his planned retirement, a phone call disrupts his peace: a 22-million-dollar summer home has gone up in flames, and the Richardsons, the flashy new couple in town, are at the centre of it all. With their personal assistant missing and a series of lavish parties distracting the island’s residents, Ed finds himself entangled in a mystery that threatens the fabric of Nantucket’s tight-knit community.
What makes this novel particularly engaging is Hilderbrand’s introduction of the Richardsons. Their sudden appearance on the island stirs curiosity and gossip, making them the talk of the town. Their extravagant parties are the stuff of legend, and everyone wants a coveted spot on their guest list. The Richardsons’ enigmatic nature kept me hooked—who are they, where did they come from, and why did they choose Nantucket?
Adding depth to the story is CoCo, the young woman who becomes the personal concierge for the Richardsons while also befriending Ed’s daughter. CoCo’s journey to Nantucket is not just for employment but also for personal reasons, adding layers to her character. Her dedication to her job, despite its restrictive conditions, and her willingness to risk it all for romance, made her one of my favourite characters.
The Narration:
The narrative’s dual timelines—before and after the fire—create a compelling structure that keeps the reader engaged. The pacing is perfect, with each chapter revealing just enough to keep you turning the pages. As always, Erin Bennett’s narration of the audiobook enhances the experience. She has a knack for capturing Hilderbrand’s style, bringing the characters and the island of Nantucket to life. The final chapter, narrated by both Hilderbrand and Bennett, adds a special touch, as does their conversation at the end of the audiobook.
Final Thoughts:
“Swan Song” is a fitting conclusion to Hilderbrand’s Nantucket novels. It’s a story of change, resilience, and the enduring charm of a place many of us have come to love through her books. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to Hilderbrand’s work, this book offers a delightful escape to a world of glittering gatherings, heartfelt moments, and sunlit shores.

Excellent review, Jodie. I’m glad that this is a wonderful conclusion to the series. My library has a 6 month wait for the audiobook, so I will probably use an audible credit as I definitely want to listen to it during the summer.
