One More for Christmas by Sarah Morgan

Sarah Morgan is one of my favourite authors. Her books have well-developed characters and meaningful relationships. One More for Christmas was a book I desperately wanted to read, and it was everything I hope it would be and more.

Gayle Mitchell is a successful author and leader of organizational change. Following an accident which landed her in hospital, she is asked who should be notified. She hesitates because work has been her life for many years. Finally she mentions the name of one of her daughters – someone she hasn’t seen or talked to in five years. In fact, Gayle has been estranged from both Samantha and her sister Ella during this time. She wonders if they would even come to visit her after how they parted five years ago.

Life has changed immensely for the two sisters. Samantha is the CEO of a travel company specializing in creating unique travel opportunities at Christmas. Ella has married and has a preschool daughter. The sisters agree to meet their mother who proclaims she wants to spend Christmas with them this year. The younger women are surprised – could this be coming from a woman who never liked Christmas and chose to work through the holidays? Samantha has to be in Scotland this Christmas to check out a new location for her clients, and so the women and Ella’s family fly across the Atlantic to spend the holidays together. The setting for the remainder of the book is absolutely perfect for a Christmas story.

This is such an interesting read, and I enjoyed every minute of it. The relationship between Gayle and her daughters is complex and based on history and life experience. I loved that Gayle fosters personal growth in women throughout the book, right from her own daughters to other female characters. I enjoyed the romance in the book and was thrilled that it tied in with the beautiful setting of the book. It was not, however, the focus of the book. The underlying message in the book is that we can only make the best decisions we can with the information we have at the time. One should not feel guilty about this, in reflection, when we realize we didn’t make the best decision.
