The Guest List is a whodunnit that will have you guessing right to the end of the book. I had a hard time putting it down.
The setting is a weekend wedding off the coast of Ireland on an isolated island. The bride is a well-known successful magazine publisher. The groom is a handsome TV star. They make such an attractive couple – one to be envied. The guests are made up of family and friends, all who have a remarkable history with the bride or groom. Many are carrying secrets. Traumatic events from the characters’ past are slowly disclosed. There is an endless supply of alcohol and drugs. Then someone on the island is found dead.
The book is told from two alternating time periods: “then” and “now”, which creates a suspenseful framework that works well. The location of the wedding has a “haunted mansion” type of vibe, complete with a peat bog that has been known to swallow anything that ventures near it.
I listened to the audiobook version of this story and thoroughly enjoyed the ensemble cast of actors ( Jot Davies, Chloe Massey, Olivia Dowd, Aoife McMahon, Sarah Ovens & Rich Keeble) who bring a voice to these well-developed characters.
I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy a great mystery read. I look forward to reading more from the author.
