I enjoy stories set in dual timelines, particularly when they involve several generations of the same family. The Inheritance by JoAnn Ross tells the tale of three generations of a family from France to a vineyard in Oregon. This is book is available now.
Plot Summary
Jackson Swann dies, leaving behind his mother and the three daughters who were all born to different women. Two of the woman know of the other’s existence, but none were aware that their father had three daughters. Tess who is the eldest of the three, was a child star turned author. Charlotte, an interior designer, has just learned that her husband has fallen in love with another woman and is leaving her. Natalie, a photographer, is the youngest of the three and was born and raised in France. She is the result of a long-time affair that Jackson had with her mother.
The women are informed of their father’s death and invited to a reading of the will at the family’s vineyard where they learn that their father has left them the vineyard. During their time at the vineyard, they learn about their father and the life he experienced, along with an opportunity to get to learn more about one another. Jackson’s mother shares the story of her life in a series of memories to her Granddaughters which further bonds these women.
Book Review
This is a beautiful story of four women coming together after loss. Each of the women is experiencing her own set of personal problems leading to their time on the vineyard. Moreover, they each had a unique relationship with their father.
Where the book really shines for me is in the relationships that develop between these four women, who were essentially strangers before arriving at the vineyard. The characters are all well developed and interesting. I enjoyed the descriptions of the vineyard and winemaking and the history of this property. This book is the perfect blend of Women’s Fiction, Historical Fiction and Romance with just the right amount of each to keep the book entertaining.
What I Liked About The Inheritance:
- The multi-generational family story
- The strong female characters
- The strangers to friends relationship of the four women
I Recommend This Book To:
Those readers who enjoy Women’s Fiction stories of multi-generations of the same family.

This seems like a really nice and inspiring story. The females there can all relate to each other somehow and are still very different. Having a unique relationship with their father, dealing with the same loss but yet having their own lives and understanding each other, that’s great. I always love reading books with strong characters. Thanks for sharing this.

Reading the blurb of this I would have thought that the women wouldn’t get along but it’s a nice surprise to hear it’s the complete opposite and more about support from these women than anything else!
