The Lies I Tell is a thriller involving two women who are seeking revenge. Will they find the satisfaction they are looking for?
[book-info]
From The Publisher:
Two women. Many aliases.
Meg Williams. Maggie Littleton. Melody Wilde. Different names for the same person, depending on the town, depending on the job. She’s a con artist who erases herself to become whoever you need her to be—a college student. A life coach. A real estate agent. Nothing about her is real. She slides alongside you and tells you exactly what you need to hear, and by the time she’s done, you’ve likely lost everything.
Kat Roberts has been waiting ten years for the woman who upended her life to return. And now that she has, Kat is determined to be the one to expose her. But as the two women grow closer, Kat’s long-held assumptions begin to crumble, leaving Kat to wonder who Meg’s true target is.
The Lies I Tell is a twisted domestic thriller that dives deep into the psyches and motivations of two women and their unwavering quest to seek justice for the past and rewrite the future.
My Thoughts:
Julia Clark knows how to write a thriller. The Lies I Tell is compelling and entertaining with plenty of twists and turns. The characters are well-developed and interesting. I thoroughly enjoy it! The story is told from the dual narrative of Meg Williams and Kat Roberts.
Meg is a con artist who alters her name and backstory to target her prey. She’s also the daughter of a victim who was also conned. Revenge against the man who changed the course of her life is first and foremost and she will stop at nothing.
Kat’s life also changed ten years ago – due to events caused by Meg. Now a journalist, she wants nothing more than to reveal Meg to the world and write about her life. She’s hired by Meg to be her assistant as a means for Kat to learn more about her. What she doesn’t count on is the friendship the two develop.
When Kat’s life turns upside down, she struggles to learn the truth about who is targeting her. To say the least, at this point I couldn’t put the book down. Could Kat trust Meg? Could she trust anyone?
I have to say my feelings toward Meg’s character changed as the book progressed. Even though I knew she was a con artist, I felt the reasons for her past cons were simply to position herself for the ultimate con. This somewhat justified her actions in my mind.
The conclusion of the book is satisfying and worth the late night to finish it. Julie Clark is now an auto-buy author for me and I look forward to her next book. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys thrillers.
I listened to the audiobook version of The Lies I Tell which was performed by Anna Caputo and Amanda Dolan. Their performances were wonderful and elevated this already amazing book.
What I Liked:
- The suspenseful plot that captivated me throughout the book
- The well-developed protagonists
- The highly-satisfying conclusion

Wonderful review, Jodie. It sounds like a gripping story, and one that would keep me up late to finish it. I am curious about Meg’s past and what turned her into a con artist.
