The Paris Connection by Lorraine Brown is a humorous look at the romance of travel and the insight into our lives gleamed along the way. It’s a wonderful escape read for those unable to travel during the pandemic. This book was previously published as Uncoupling.
Plot Summary
Hannah and her boyfriend Simon have spent several days in Venice before boarding their overnight train to Amsterdam. Trying to get some sleep on their journey, Hannah finds the train car she’s in to be noisy and so escapes to another where she finally can get some rest. When she awakens a few hours later, she learns that the train has divided sometime during the middle of the night and she is now heading to Paris while Simon continues to Amsterdam.
Now alone in Paris without her purse, passport, cell phone and train ticket Hannah finds herself alone waiting for the next train to Amsterdam scheduled for several hours later. When she is approached by Leo, a Frenchman on the train who has also inadvertently found himself in Paris, he offers to show her his city while they await the next train. She reluctantly agrees and so starts a whirlwind tour of Paris that find Hannah learning as much about herself as she does this beautiful city.
Book Review
The Paris Connection is an entertaining read. As someone who has been to Paris and wants to visit again, I thoroughly enjoyed the sightseeing trip that Leo takes Hannah on. The reader is taken to several highlights of the city as the photographer in Hannah happily snaps her camera.
What I enjoyed most about this book is the personal growth I witnessed in Hannah. She learns about what is important to her during this unexpected side trip, and finds herself learning to trust her instincts. I love that she begins to take chances in life, and I could feel her gain confidence as the story progresses.
What I did find somewhat disappointing, however, was that the character development wasn’t as developed in Leo as I would have wanted. As a result, my focus wasn’t on him as much as I would have liked or expected. Having said that, the story was absolutely charming and I certainly enjoyed it.
Audiobook Review
I listened to the audiobook version of The Paris Connection which was narrated by Imogen Church. Her voice is clear, crisp and easy to listen to. I did listen to this audiobook at 1.45x speed which was faster than my usual 1.25x. Those who enjoy audiobooks may wish to choose this format.
What I Liked About The Paris Connection:
- The whirlwind trip around Paris visiting many landmarks
- The personal growth of Hannah experienced during the length of the book
- The theme of taking chances in life in order to feel fulfilled

Great review! I enjoyed the same things, when I read this, especially Hannah’s growth, but agree there was development missing for other characters that made it hard to get to know them.

Great review! I love a good travel book (particularly Paris, haha) and it’s great that Hannah’s character developed, although it’s a pity about Leo’s. Thanks for sharing!

I liked the way you summarized the plot and the fact that you identified the weakness of the way the one of the main characters is built. Sounds like a fan read ☺️

I’ve never been to Paris but I would love to go! This book seems like the perfect read to feel as though you’re there. It’s too bad there wasn’t much development for Leo, but I’m glad to hear that Hannah showed growth through the book. Thanks for sharing!

I’d give this book a go as it sounds decent and I would enjoy the descriptions of Paris as someone who has yet to visit. It does seem disappointing that Leo isn’t as developed as Hannah as he seems kind of central to her internal journey. Great review!

I have never been to Paris so this could be a nice read, it would be nice if they went into Leo’s character more. I don’t know what I would have done if I got lost in a city without any phone or passport haha, probably freak out a little. Great post! xx

Great review! Paris is my favourite setting for a travel book and this seems like an interesting read. Being stuck in a new city without a phone, passport or money sounds quite scary though!
