Dating apps have been very popular in recent years. Although I have never needed to use one, I have friends who have met their spouses using them. In my latest read The Soulmate Equation by Christina Lauren, science meets the world of dating apps. What transpires is an interesting contemporary romance with all the usual humour and physical attraction we have come to expect from this writing duo.
Plot Summary
Jess Davis is a self-employed data and statistics wizard and the single parent to her precocious daughter Juno. Each work day, Jess works out of a coffee shop with her author bestie Fizz where she hears about GeneticAlly, a new DNA-based matchmaking company. She’s never used dating apps before, but understands and appreciates the science behind GeneticAlly.
When Fizz gifts her the opportunity to try it, she submits her sample. Imagine her surprise when she is a 98% match with GeneticAlly’s founder, Dr. River Pena. She actually has a hard time believing it, because she knows him as an unfriendly customer from the coffee shop. Nevertheless, Jess is presented with an offer she can’t refuse – a high sum of money from the company for dating River for the next three months. You see, the company is about to go public and the press about Jess and River’s romance could really drive up their stock price. But will Jess and River be the nearly perfectly matched couple their GeneticAlly’s score suggests?
Book Review
I really enjoyed The Soulmate Equation. I found the characters to be well-developed and absolutely likeable. The storyline was both engaging and entertaining, and speaks to both leaving things to fate, and making sound choices. I appreciated the strong, intelligent female protagonist and how this character represents women in her chosen field. I would also like to acknowledge the special relationship that Jess had with her Grandparents. It was great to see that Jess hadn’t followed in her mother’s footsteps which speaks to this relationship and the support she had received. Most of all, I thoroughly enjoyed Juno’s character. What a charming, precocious seven year old.
What I Liked About The Soulmate Equation:
- Well-developed, likeable characters
- An engaging and entertaining storyline
- A strong, intelligent female protagonist
I Recommend This Book To:

This book sounds like a lot of fun and we love the concept. It makes us think about the popularity of the 36 questions game and how psychologists still test it.

The main concept is intriguing, although part of me is a bit creeped out by the whole “DNA-based dating company” (who controls it, privacy measures, and whatnot)
But I will definitely be checking it out because fake dating is one of my favorite tropes plus it does sound like an amazing book!
Thank you for sharing this fun read!

I usually end up saying I dont do too much fiction lately but this was really really interesting. Because people in teal life would go and also fall for such a thing out of too much curiosity. Love the review and can say this a potential read for me too. Xx
