I really enjoy books that celebrate friendship, family and living life to its fullest. The Summer Seekers by Sarah Morgan does just that. If you’re looking for a feel good adventure, this one is for you.
Plot Summary
Kathleen is an eighty year old woman living on her own in her beach home. She’s always been one for adventure and in fact was the host of a travel show, The Summer Seekers, which had a run over two decades. When an intruder enters her home, her daughter Liza feels its time for her mother to sell the home and to move into a retirement community. Kathleen, on the other hand, has different ideas on what she wants to do.
Liza has grown up having her mother be away from home for months as a time while filming her travel show. She’s adamant that she will be home to take of her husband and twin daughters. This sacrifice has burned Liza out – she feels underappreciated and has lost a big piece of her identity.
Martha is a twenty-five year old unemployed woman fresh out of a relationship. She’s back living with her parents and is in need of a change. Then she spots an advertisement for a driver and companion to escort Kathleen on a road trip along Route 66. She has little experience driving, but how difficult could it be to drive in a foreign country escorting an eighty year old woman?
Book Review
I really enjoyed this book. The theme of it never being too late to start over is an timely one – many of us will feel the need to start over as things begin to open up after the pandemic. The characters are all highly likeable and charming. I appreciate the fact that these three strong women are at different points in their lives and are open to new opportunities. The story is engaging and entertaining – the journey along Route 66 allows the readers to take a road trip with these characters. I enjoyed the discussion of local foods and landscapes which added interest. Liza’s journey of reconnecting to her younger self was especially meaningful to those of us in our middle years.
What I Liked About The Summer Seekers:
- The diversity in age of the three female protagonists
- The feeling of accompanying Kathleen and Martha on their road trip
- The theme of it never being too late to start over

I am definitely adding this book to my good read lists of books to read. The age diversity attracts me as well between the women. You don’t often see this in books.
