My Week:
Happy New Year! We had a quiet evening at home to ring in 2025, though the fireworks in my area went on for hours. A final round at 3:00 am was definitely not appreciated!
The weather this week has been mild, with a mix of rainy and drier days. Temperatures have stayed above freezing, and the forecast suggests more of the same. I’m not complaining – much of the country is dealing with snow, and I’m happy to do without it.
We’ve already taken down all the Christmas decorations inside the house, and the outdoor lights will come down soon. I always enjoy the festive décor leading up to and during the holidays, but I also appreciate the simpler, more minimalist look once the season is over.
Books I’ve Added to My Shelves This Week:
From Publishers, Netgalley, Edelweiss+ & Libro.fm:
The Favorites is an epic love story set in the ruthless world of elite figure skating, following Katarina Shaw and Heath Rocha, a passionate duo who rise from turbulent childhoods to become Olympic ice-dancing sensations. Their fiery chemistry, rebellious style, and rollercoaster relationship captivate the world—until a shocking incident at the Olympics abruptly ends their partnership. A decade later, an unauthorized documentary threatens to redefine their legacy, pushing Kat to break her silence and reveal the truth behind their all-consuming bond and dramatic fallout. Inspired by Wuthering Heights, this tale explores obsession, ambition, and the price of success.

What I’m Watching:
This week we watched The Mountain Between Us on Netflix and thoroughly enjoyed it. It stars Kate Winslet and Idris Elba and tells the story of two strangers whose plane crashes, forcing them to rely on each other to survive. Here is the trailer:

I wish you a wonderful holiday week ahead!

I love that Kate Winslet film. We have had snow predicted tonight but I will believe it when I see it. It would be the first time in three years.
thathappyreader
I hope we go three years without snow Jamie!
mae
Have a great year in reading in 2025…
thathappyreader
Thanks Mae.
Jonetta | Blue Mood Café
One of my friends compared the full cast narration of The Favorites to Daisy Jones & The Six. Hope we both love it!
thathappyreader
I’ve seen the book marketed that way Jonetta! I’m enjoying it so far!
Deb Nance at Readerbuzz
There’s the tiniest possibility that we will get snow next week.
We also have un-decorated. I love for everything to go back to normal as soon as possible after the holidays are over.
thathappyreader
I hope that you can enjoy the snow if you get some Deb.
Anne@HeadFullofBooks
The Favorites sounds so good. I like tell-alls sometimes. Happy New Year.
thathappyreader
Happy New Year Anne!
Carla
The fireworks are too much! Both me and my cat were woken up by them and I think we both thought someone was trying to break into the house. It took a minute for me to wake up and realize what was going on.
I haven’t heard of this movie but I do like Kate Winslet. I don’t have Netflix though so I’ll have to see if it’s available somewhere else.
thathappyreader
They are too much Carla. I hope you can find the movie.
Shelleyrae @ Book’d Out
The Favorites sounds like it could be intense, I look forward to learning what you think.
Wishing you a great reading week

My decorations are down too! I love them up, but also love the way it feels when they are down. Lol.
thathappyreader
Exactly Erin!
Idea-ist @ GetLostinLit
its always sad when the decorations come down, our tree is coming down today.
thathappyreader
I used to think so too but now it’s something that I actually look forward to!
Raji
My decorations are still up, it’s usually the end of January by the time I can convince myself to take them down lol. Looking forward to your review of The Favorites, it sounds really interesting!
thathappyreader
Thanks Raji!
Lisa Mandina (Lisa Loves Literature)
I feel like I haven’t had time to take down my Christmas tree. If I get a snow day off work tomorrow, I will do it then. Otherwise I’ll probably wait till next weekend. We had a nicer week with a bit warmer temps, but now we’re having lots of snow and cold for the next few days. Hope you have a good week!

I hope you don’t get too much snow Lisa!
Anne - Books of My Heart
We were quiet at home for New Years Eve like most days. I read the book Mountain Between Us because Charlie Hunnam was originally cast in it, and enjoyed it. I never did see the movie but I should. Happy New Year!
Anne – Books of My Heart This is my Sunday Post

I’d be interested if you do watch it how it compares to the book Anne.
Cindy's Book Corner
Happy New Year! We also got our Christmas decorations down and put away. I have been on a cleaning spree, cleaning things out and ready to get the house clean. I hope you have a great week!
thathappyreader
Well done Cindy!
Vicki
Thanks for posting about The Mountain Between Us, it looks really good so I’ll watch it later today.
thathappyreader
I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.
Barb @ Booker T's Farm
I loved The Mountain Between Us when I watched it some time ago. We had a low-key New Year’s Eve too. We did stay up until about 1:00am and shared a bottle of champagne but mainly we watched TV and played with the dogs. Luckily it rained here on that evening so the people who normally let off fireworks were rained out. Hate to say it but that made me very happy! Hope you have lots of good reading in the new year.
thathappyreader
It rained here too Barb but this is Raincouver so nothing stops them!
Literary Feline
We got our Christmas decorations up so late, I’m not sure I’m ready to take them down. I probably should though. We had a quiet New Year’s. for the most part. I’ll have to check out The Mountain Between Us. I really like Idris Elba. I hope you have a Happy New Year and enjoy your reading in 2025!
thathappyreader
Thank you!
hena
Happy New Year. We too watched a movie and played some board games right up till 12am and then off to bed we were.
thathappyreader
That sounds lovely Hena.
Carla@CarlaLovesToRead
Happy 2025, Jodie. I read The Mountain Between Us a couple of years ago and really enjoyed the book, I’ll have to watch the movie. We had snow the day after I left for Florida, so I timed it right. The sunshine here is definitely a welcome sight. I hope you have a wonderful week.
thathappyreader
You too Carla!

Happy New Year, Jodie! I’ve also taken down my Christmas decorations. I usually keep them up longer, but it does feel nice to have a clean space with minimal decor to start the new year.

Happy New Year Winnie!
