Women’s Fiction books about life in the US South provide me with a unique vibe. Authors who write in this specific genre typically illustrate this region’s love of their way of life – the importance of family and friends and their beloved community. The essence of life in the South emanates from Kristy Woodson Harvey’s latest book Under the Southern Sky. This book reflects not only this region, but some modern day issues which many face each day. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Plot Summary
Amelia Saxton is a recently separated journalist immersed in her work. Investigating a story of frozen embryos, she stumbles upon the knowledge that her childhood friend Parker and his late wife Greer’s embryos have been deemed abandoned. She also knows she need to alert Parker, likely bringing up some painful memories along the way.
In the three years since Greer passed, Parker has been unable to move forward. With Amelia’s reminder of the four frozen embryos, he knows he has to find a way to have a piece of Greer back. Determined to become a single father, he begins his search for a surrogate. Despite being away from each other for many years and each grieving their own losses, Amelia and Parker find solace in one another as they try to move on with their lives.
Book Review
Under the Southern Sky is a lovely story of the importance of selfless giving to others. The character development is remarkable and the genuine kindness in this story were highlights. The personal growth that Amelia and Parker both experience beautifully unfolds as this story progresses. The book deals with some heavier issues, and the author handles these with care and empathy. I appreciated the theme of family and unquestioned friendship always being at the forefront. This is my first book by this author, and I look forward to reading more from her in the near future.
Audiobook Review
I listened to the audiobook version of the book which was narrated by Cassandra Campbell, Michael Crouch, Rebekkah Ross, and Karissa Vacker. Their performances were both expressive and articulate. Furthermore, the cast did a great job of representing these characters and gave this format the southern flair it deserved. I would not hesitate to recommend this version to those that appreciate this format.
What I Liked About Under the Southern Sky:
- The well-developed and highly likeable characters
- The theme of selfless giving
- The care taken in discussing some of the heavier issues.
My rating:
4.5 stars out of 5.
