Do you know that feeling you get when reading a book and knowing you’re going to love it, right from the very beginning? That’s the feeling I got when I started listening to Weather Girl by Rachel Lynn Solomon. I started following this author after listening to The Ex-Talk in 2021, and she is now on my auto-read list. This book is available now.
From The Publisher:
Ari Abrams has always been fascinated by the weather, and she loves almost everything about her job as a TV meteorologist. Her boss, legendary Seattle weatherwoman Torrance Hale, is too distracted by her tempestuous relationship with her ex-husband, the station’s news director, to give Ari the mentorship she wants. Ari, who runs on sunshine and optimism, is at her wits’ end. The only person who seems to understand how she feels is sweet but reserved sports reporter Russell Barringer.
In the aftermath of a disastrous holiday party, Ari and Russell decide to team up to solve their bosses’ relationship issues. Between secret gifts and double dates, they start nudging their bosses back together. But their well-meaning meddling backfires when the real chemistry builds between Ari and Russell.
Working closely with Russell means allowing him to get to know parts of herself that Ari keeps hidden from everyone. Will he be able to embrace her dark clouds as well as her clear skies?
Book Review:
I enjoyed Weather Girl. While romance is featured in the book, there is so much more to the book than this. The book balances some heavier subjects with all the wittiness of a good romantic comedy.
The characters are all highly likeable and the setting in a news station is interesting. Each of the chapters has fun weather-related names which provide a bit of a “forecast” into each chapter. Ari’s character reflects the chronic depression she is managing and the author does a great job of capturing changes in her demeanour when she’s in an acute state.
The fact that Russell became a father at the age of 17 is also something not often seen in books. The relationship he has built with his daughter is something very special. I also appreciate the fact that this family (and Ari’s) are Jewish and I enjoyed seeing how religion played a role in their lives.
There are some very funny moments in the book which I enjoyed. the parallel of Ari and Russell’s relationship with their bosses was cleverly written. The book has a bit of banter, but some steamier scenes for those readers who enjoy a high level of passion. I look forward to reading the next book from this author.
Audiobook Review:
I listened to the audiobook version of Weather girl which was narrated by Sarah Mollo-Christensen. Her performance was riveting and I found her sweet, articulate voice to be the perfect addition to an already great book. I would encourage those who enjoy audiobooks to choose this format of the book.
What I Liked:
- The author’s depiction of Ari’s chronic depression
- The newsroom setting
- The parallel relationships of Ari and Russell with their bosses
I Recommend This Book To:
Those readers who enjoy contemporary romance with interesting characters.

Lovely review Jodie! I also loved this book, and you’re right, Russell’s relationship with his daughter is so special and endearing. Also, his relationship with his daughter’s mother is kind of cool too. I also listened to this book and enjoyed the narrator.
