It’s time for Who Wears it Better in April 2024? In this feature, I look at different book covers used for the same book. In some cases, the cover is chosen by geography (e.g. North America or UK). Other times, it’s based on the edition of the book (hardcover, paperback, kindle etc). Where it becomes confusing is when the book is given a completely different title! Just for fun, and because I love talking books, let’s see what different books covers I’ve noticed recently. You can click on the book covers to read my review of each book when available. Let’s go!
The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros:
The first battle today is for that has been published decades ago that was given a contemporary makeover for its 25th Anniversary. This book actually has 158 editions and is published in multiple languages. These two examples are vastly different from one another and each gives me a unique vibe. My preference is the Vintage cover simply because it makes me want to learn more about the book.
The Many Lives of Mama Love by Lara Love Hardin:
This current Oprah’s Book Club selection has two very different covers. The Simon & Schuster cover has a collaged bird taking flight – I love the that there are references to writing on this bird. The Endeavour cover is more like a photo representing the orange jumpsuit of having been a prisoner and then blue denim which depicts her life afterwards. I love the symbolism expressed in this cover and it is therefore my choice.
Seven Summers by Paige Toon:
These two covers are fairly similar in the colours chosen, the tagline and the use of seashell(s). I love them both. The fonts are different however and I prefer the Random House UK font which is why this cover is my choice for Seven Summers.
Under Your Spell by Laura Wood:
This is another example of a change in cover based on the geography of the publisher and I love them both! The Atria cover has a more simple cover and I like how they’ve had a heart out of the guitar string showing that it is a romance novel. The Simon & Schuster UK cover has a man on the beach playing a guitar at sunset. They each have the same tagline. This one was a hard choice for me but I choose the Simon & Schuster UK cover because I’m a sucker for a sunset.
The Husbands by Holly Gramazio:
There are a few similarities but also differences between these covers for the current Read With Jenna pick. Both covers show a ladder and have a few quick reviews from other authors. I like the blue in the Vintage Digital cover and the women sawing the ladder but I love the choice of multicolour font and the tumbling title of the Doubleday cover. It is for this reason that the Doubleday cover is my choice.
So that’s Who Wears it Better in April 2024? I’d love to know which covers you prefer, so please let me know in the comments. Looking for more covers to compare? I’ve not read any of these books, so it is hard to pick one. I agree with all your choices except for Husbands. I like how the word falls out of the attic. I think it depicts the story better (at least according to the book blurb). I hope you had a wonderful holiday, Jodie. Happy to see you back safe and sound.

I love this feature on your blog! I love both covers of Paige Toon and Laura Wood, but I think the UK version has just overtaken haha. Colour is definitely important for me 🙂

Lisa Mandina (Lisa Loves Literature)
Okay, on the first book I really don’t like either of the covers! For the Many Lives book I like the one with the bird. For Seven Summers I like the first one. I do like both of the Under Your Spell covers too! Like you I also like the colors of the Doubleday Husbands cover. Fun post as always!
