It’s time for Who Wears it Better in May 2024? In this feature, I look at different book covers used for the same book. In some cases, the cover is chosen by geography (e.g. North America or UK). Other times, it’s based on the edition of the book (hardcover, paperback, kindle etc). Where it becomes confusing is when the book is given a completely different title! Just for fun, and because I love talking books, let’s see what different books covers I’ve noticed recently. You can click on the book covers to read my review of each book when available. Let’s go!
The Paradise Problem by Christina Lauren:
Today’s first battle is Christina Lauren’s recently released book “The Paradise Problem”. While I like both of these covers, it’s the tropical feel I get in the Gallery Books cover that is the winner for me.
Better Left Unsent by Lia Louis:
These covers are not that appealing to me, so I’m curious to know your thoughts. Although I prefer the colours used in the Zaffre cover, I don’t appreciate characters without faces. My choice is the Atria/Emily Bestler cover because the main character has a face and is expressing the humility of what happens to her in the book.
The Most Fun We Ever Had by Claire Lombardo:
This is an example of one book with two very different covers and neither cover is particularly appealing to me. I haven’t read this book but the cover that makes me most likely to pick up the book would be the Knopf cover.
Every Time I Go On Vacation Someone Dies by Catherine Mack:
I am attracted to both of these book covers. I love the colours used in both as well as the use of lemons as a nod to the book’s setting. If I’m honest, I’m going back and forth between these two but because the book is a mystery my choice is the Macmillan cover.
Once Upon a Wardrobe by Patti Callahan Henry:
These covers are similar but also different. Both books were published by Harper Muse one year apart – which leads me to think that the book cover wasn’t attracting the readership as much as the publisher originally thought it would. I’m a fan of colour and I love the red coat in the 2021 cover so for that reason it is my choice.
So that’s Who Wears it Better in May 2024? I’d love to know which covers you prefer, so please let me know in the comments. Looking for more covers to compare? Check out the following recent monthly Who Wears it Better posts! I appreciate you reading and supporting this blog and hope that you have a wonderful day!
Melike
My preferences would be the same ones you picked as well. Out of all the covers my favorite is the tropical one on the Christina Lauren book.

I love that one too Melike!
Jonetta | Blue Mood Café
I selected the same covers as you except for Every Time I Go On Vacation. I love all of those elements as it pulls me in more than the other.
Great post, as usual, Jodie💜

Thank you Jonetta!

These are so fun! I love Gallery Books for Paradise Problem, Atria for Better Left Unsent, Knopf for The Most Fun, Minotaur for Every Time I Go on Vacation, and 2021 for Once Upon a Wardrobe. Thank you for sharing these Jodie! I love how colorful these covers are. I hope you have a great weekend!

I hope you have a great long weekend too Winnie!
ER LeVar
I fully support the Gallery Books cover for “The Paradise Problem”. The other one feels too same-same for someone who unpacks boxes of books every single day! I don’t know that the GB cover is all that great, but it really stands out–which is the point, right?

Thanks for your comment ER!

Looks like we have different tastes (at least visually). 😀 For The Paradise Problem, I love the Piatkus cover! It looks a little messy, but the color combination used is pretty unique, and will probably catch my eye when it’s amongst other books. 🙂 The overall vibe is more fun as well (but maybe it’s bc I prefer those books over serious ones). For Every Time I Go On Vacation Someone Dies, I prefer the Minotaur version. Love the illustrations, and I think it’ll be a fun twist to have the cover look fun and flirty, then have the content be a mystery. 😂

That’s why I love doing these posts Aimee! Thanks for letting me know your thoughts!
Mehsi
Ohhh you picked some fun covers this time! I love the Christina Lauren book with all the leaves, so pretty!!

Thanks for reading Mehsi!

This is fun! Though I frankly don’t why the publishers bothered with Once Upon a Wardrobe – if they wanted to do a makeover with the cover, they needed to start again from scratch, not merely retread a somewhat uninspiring effort! Thank you for sharing, Jodie:)).

Thanks for reading Sarah!

I love the covers you chose this month, Jodie. I am with you on all but the Lia Louis cover. For me, the Zaffre cover better depicts the story, although I’m not a fan of people without faces either.
