It’s time for Who Wears it Better in October 2023? In this feature, I look at different book covers used for the same book. In some cases, the cover is chosen by geography (e.g. North America or UK). Other times, it’s based on the edition of the book (hardcover, paperback, kindle etc). Where it becomes confusing is when the book is given a completely different title! Just for fun, and because I love talking books, let’s see what different books covers I’ve noticed recently. You can click on the book covers to read my review of each book when available. Let’s go!
Talking At Night by Claire Daverley:
Talking at Night has three different covers. While the Michael Joseph and Penguin covers are similar, placement of the title and author’s name vary. The colours used are also very different. The Pamela Dorman cover shows a completely different scene which includes a couple looking forward. None of these covers really speaks to me but if I had to choose one I think I would choose the Penguin cover for the colours used and the near empty cereal bowl.
The Book Club Hotel by Sarah Morgan (aka The Christmas Book Club):
This book not only has a different cover, but also a different title based on geography. I love both of these covers. They are whimsical, colourful and depict a hotel with a winter setting. I prefer the UK cover because it shows the friends discussing a book outside a very cute hotel (notice the smoke coming from the chimney and the little bird resting on the title!)
The Wake Up Call by Beth O’Leary:
Another example of two very different covers. The Berkley cover depicts the rings that are part of the storyline while the Quercus cover shows the hotel desk. Both covers have the same tagline but use different quotes from authors who have read the book. I prefer the Berkley cover because I love a blue cover and it included the rings.
Love, Holly by Emily Stone (aka The Christmas Letter):
This is another example of the same book having not only a different cover, but a different title dependent on geographical location. Having said that, the book covers are very similar. The UK cover is blue with the addition of snowflakes and a tagline. The US cover is yellow with the addition of a streetlight and some lights. I like them both but prefer the UK cover because it is blue (I’m not a big fan of yellow).
Darling Girls by Sally Hepworth:
Darling Girls was published in Australia in September but those of us in North America will have to wait until its April 2024 publication date. Both covers have teal backgrounds with yellow font for the author’s name. This is pretty much where the similarities end. The Macmillan Australia cover has the profile of a young girl on it where the St Martin’s Press cover shows a pool. Neither one of these covers grab me but I prefer the St Martin’s Press cover which feels more dramatic and mysterious.
So that’s Who Wears it Better in October 2023? I’d love to know which covers you prefer, so please let me know in the comments. I appreciate you reading and supporting this blog and hope that you have a wonderful day!

Ooh, you know, I think both the Sally Hepworth covers are… not that great. Which is really sad, because I genuinely enjoy Sally Hepworth books. If I didn’t know her, I wouldn’t pick up either of those options–and I’d be missing out!

My thoughts exactly ER.

I love the Penguin and Pamela cover for Talking at Night, UK version of Christmas Book Club, Quercus cover for Wake-Up Call, UK cover for Christmas Letter, and St. Martin’s Press for Darling Girls. Thank you for sharing Jodie, these covers all had such beautiful colors. I hope you enjoy your weekend!

Love these colorful covers. I sometimes buy books based on their cover. Lol
And Christmas books! I’m excited to read some good ones this season.

1. Talking at Night: I’m going with the Dorman cover because the other two with cereal bowls don’t tell me anything. I guess if I knew more about the story they’d have a better shot.
2. The Book Club Hotel: I absolutely love both of these covers but am giving the edge to the US one simply because of the illustration style. It’s one of my favorites.
3. The Wake-Up Call: I have the one with the Berkley cover but haven’t read it yet. I just prefer the layout and font style of the other version. It’s more appealing to my eye.
4. Love, Holly: These two are so similar aside from the cover and I’m declaring a tie because I love both colors!
5. Darling Girls: Much prefer the second one for the same reasons you state, Jodie. It gives off an eerie vibe.
Love these posts!

So I don’t really like any of the covers for the first one, but like you I’d pick the third one. I like the first cover for The Book Club Hotel, on The Wake Up Call I think I like the second cover better. I’ll pick the US version of the Love, Holly. Neither of the last book’s covers call out to me either. I always love these posts!
